A toast to our seniors!
Morrison Academy Taiwan
It's that time of year again! After school today marked less than 2018 hours until graduation (including holidays, weekends, and evening). The MAC senior class of 2018 carried on the tradition of chalking on the plaza and making a toast (sparkling juice) to mark the occasion. Check out this fun 360 time-lapse video of the event. Teacher Tales: Morrison history teacher - Darren Lu
Why am I here at Morrison? The story began as I was about to graduate from UCLA. I thought I was done with school (for good), I didn’t have any job lined up after graduation, but I knew that I did not want to have a job that I would end up dreading every single morning for the rest of my life. As an excuse not to look for a job right away, I signed up for a short-term missions trip with my church to Dong Yin 東引 the summer after graduation. Dong Yin is a tiny island that serves as a military base for Taiwan. There are about a hundred non-military families living on the island who provide services to the soldiers - breakfast shop, 7-11, internet cafes. Our team served at the local school, and held a English/VBS camp for the kids living on the island. It was there where God called me to be a teacher (ironically, teaching was the last thing I thought I would end up doing).
Back in Los Angeles, I started applying for graduate schools so that I could be certified to teach. As I previously thought that I was done with school for good, I never tried to improve on my mediocre undergrad GPA. As a result, I ended up taking the long way in order to get into graduate school (moral of the story - do not tank your gpa just because you think you can). I experienced the poorest times of my life, experiencing constant single digits in my bank account and living on 39￠ Taco Tuesdays. I have also never studied that hard in my life, graduating with a better gpa than my weighted high school gpa. God was faithful throughout this entire journey. As I was walking back to my car from my last graduate class, I got a call asking if I was interested in substitute teaching at a school I did summer camp at. Two weeks later, while subbing at that school, the principal told me an opening for next school year and she interviewed me on the spot. That was where I taught for the next seven years.
During the school year of 2014/2015, life was good, I had a great work schedule teaching all the classes that I enjoy teaching. With the birth of my third child, I started asking God if “that was it”. Am I going to continue my 2-hour daily commute and “just teach” for the foreseeable future? It was around this time that I came across an opening for a history teacher position at Morrison. I knew about Morrison because my college roommate came here and many of his Morrison friends became my friends too. I applied, thinking that I was just putting my name into the system. That very night, I got an email asking me to complete the full application and the rest was history. In our 2.5 years here at Morrison, our family has been blessed by the community. It is also a joy to work with the staff and students everyday. To be continued… ... See MoreSee Less
