Bible This week the First Graders will learn about Joseph.

Our verse for the quarter is John 3:16. This is a verse the students will learn well this year.

Below are songs we will be singing of this verse. First Graders always love these songs!

Seeds Family John 3:16 or The Rizers John 3:16

* I can sequence the events in Joseph’s life.

Reading Workshop I love books and reading, and I am thrilled to help your child grow in this area. This week First Graders are continuing to build good reading habits as we launch Reading Workshop. Students have learned about “Good Fit”, “Just Right” books and how to choose them. Each student now has a book box full of “Good Fit” books. We are continuing to grow in our reading stamina. Last week students finished learning our 9 fix-up strategies for figuring out tricky words. This week students will learn more about schema or prior knowledge.

·       I can describe characters, settings, and major events in a story.

·       I can use my prior knowledge with a text.

·       I can use phonics and word skills to figure out words.

Writing Workshop We began Writing Workshop and have learned why we write and what kinds of things we write. This week students will use their Heart Maps to help get ideas for personal narratives. Students will also write about John Chapman “Johnny Appleseed.”

·       I can write a personal narrative.

·       I can write a complete sentence.

Word Work/Phonics We are reviewing CVC and VC words.

* I can decode one syllable words.

Vocabulary This week students will learn the words picky, crabbiest, squiggly, customer, and rescued.

* I can learn new vocabulary words from stories I hear.

Math This week we continue our unit on adding and subtracting. Students will learn strategies for helping them add: adding 0, number lines, counting on, ten frames, doubles, and doubles plus 1.

* I can use a variety of strategies to count within 20, and fluently within 10.

Social Studies This week we will continue to learn how to be a good citizen. We will discuss how to make good choices.

* I can be a responsible citizen.

Science
Reading Buddies Our reading buddy time will be Thursday afternoon from 2:15-2:45pm.
Optional Donation In First Grade we do many extra, fun, and special projects such as baking, STEAM projects, and crafts. Also, at the end your child will receive a special portfolio with photos. Mr. Finch has allowed me to ask for an OPTIONAL NT 500 donation to help cover different items such as these. If you would like to give this donation please send the money in an envelope. This donation is appreciated but again completely optional.

*Chapels– You are always welcome at all EMS chapels…please refer to our newsletter or the EMS Express for the times and locations of EMS chapels. EMS Chapels are always at 8:10am. Our K-12 theme this year is All In. Many of our chapel and Bible times will explore this theme.

*All volunteers: If you wish to volunteer at any point in this school year, whether it be as a classroom assistant, lunch room assistant, or as a chaperone on field trips, you will need to begin the process in the front office with Mrs. Sawatzky or Mrs. Edwards by completing the CSPN training. Office hours are 7:30 am to 4:00pm. You will be able to begin volunteering as soon as you complete this process.

*After school– Please make sure your child has adult supervision after school. If you are not able to pick up your child immediately after school please make appropriate arrangements. Any student not under direct adult supervision will be asked to wait in the Atrium up until 4pm. Students are dismissed at 3:15pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays and at 2:50pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

*Water Bottles– Please make sure your child has a water bottle with fresh water every day. This is especially important during these afternoons with hot weather.  The water bottle needs to be one that is easy to open and close. Water bottles that do not close well can make a huge mess if they tip over or in backpacks. Your child may only bring water to school. No other kind of drink is allowed.

*Snacks– Your child needs to bring a healthy snack each day. We will eat our snacks at 9:30am every morning. This snack will help your child refuel and have energy throughout the entire morning. Please do not send candy or sweets.
