|Reading Workshop||Students will learn about different text features of non-fiction. We have our Famous People/World Changers Museum.
· I can use phonics and word skills to figure out words.
|Writing Workshop||Students will use CHOPS to edit and check their writing. CHOPS: C- Capitals, H- Handwriting, O- Out loud, P- Punctuation, and S- Spelling words they know. Students are writing about their famous people.
* I can write a complete sentence using conventions and capital letters.
|Word Work/Phonics||We are learning all of the vowel teams/ digraphs. This will be our 5th syllable that we have learned about. These are the other syllables we have learned about: closed, open, Silent e (Magic e), R-controlled (Bossy R).
-ed and the different sounds it can make
|Vocabulary||* I can learn new vocabulary words.|
|Math||We are working on place value.|
|Social Studies||Students will continue learning about famous people and the character traits they show. We are also looking at families long ago and in the present time.
* I can name positive character traits that describe a responsible citizen (fairness, respect for others and the environment, courage, equality, tolerance, perseverance, and commitment, compassion)
|Reading Buddies||Our reading buddy time is Thursday afternoon from 2:15-2:45pm.|

*Chapels– You are always welcome at all EMS chapels…please refer to our newsletter or the EMS Express for the times and locations of EMS chapels. EMS Chapels are always at 8:10am. Our K-12 theme this year is All In. Many of our chapel and Bible times will explore this theme.
*All volunteers: If you wish to volunteer at any point in this school year, whether it be as a classroom assistant, lunch room assistant, or as a chaperone on field trips, you will need to begin the process in the front office with Mrs. Sawatzky or Mrs. Edwards by completing the CSPN training. Office hours are 7:30 am to 4:00pm. You will be able to begin volunteering as soon as you complete this process.
*After school– Please make sure your child has adult supervision after school. If you are not able to pick up your child immediately after school please make appropriate arrangements. Any student not under direct adult supervision will be asked to wait in the Atrium up until 4pm. Students are dismissed at 3:15pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays and at 2:50pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
*Water Bottles– Please make sure your child has a water bottle with fresh water every day. This is especially important during these afternoons with hot weather. The water bottle needs to be one that is easy to open and close. Water bottles that do not close well can make a huge mess if they tip over or in backpacks. Your child may only bring water to school. No other kind of drink is allowed.
*Snacks– Your child needs to bring a healthy snack each day. We will eat our snacks at 9:30am every morning. This snack will help your child refuel and have energy throughout the entire morning. Please do not send candy or sweets.
