Happy Birthday …
…to Micah! He turns eleven on Tuesday!
Important Announcement About Toys at School
Please remind your child that students are not supposed to bring toys of any kind to school, except for balls to be used at recess. In the last few days and weeks, there have been many times when 5th graders have been playing with Rubik’s Cubes and other toys behind their desks when they were supposed to be working. From now on, any toys that 5th graders bring to school will be confiscated and returned to them at the end of the school year. If a student thinks they have a valid reason to bring a toy to school, they must check with me before bringing it.
Here’s what we’ll be Learning This Week:
Bible – This week we will be learning about Moses, focusing on the theme of serving God. Our memory verse for the week is Romans 5:7-8, which says, Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Reading and Writing – This week we’re going to start studying the novel Esperanza Rising. Please note that students will need to read most chapters on their own at home. Often this will involve some reading over the weekend. They may count this toward their weekly reading log. We are also going to learn to write compare/contrast paragraphs.
Spelling – Our list is the one called “Sort 28” on Spelling City.
Math – We are starting Chapter Three, which is on how to divide with a one-digit divisor. We’ll learn to relate division to multiplication, use division models, and take advantage of division patterns.
Science – We’ll learn about solubility and the physics of heating and cooling. We may have a chance to do an activity to investigate solubility.
Social Studies – We’ll be learning more about daily life in America’s Middle and Southern Colonies.
