Class Information and Meet the Teacher Night
I have put together a packet of information about 5th grade that explains how things will work this year. You will receive a copy this Friday at Meet the Teacher Night, but if you’d like a preview (or need to refer to it later) it is available online. You can find it at go.mca.org.tw/tchinfog5. I hope to see you all this Friday!
Portal to the Universe
I’m excited to announce a new resource that will help students keep track of the educational websites we use most often, as well as school projects, the library catalog, and other Morrison pages. Introducing (drum roll, please) … Our Class’s Portal to the Universe! Parents, please take a look at http://bit.ly/2PvO4ow and let me know what you think! (Students have already received an email with this link.) From time to time I will update it with new links, instruction sheets for current projects, etc. You may find it fun and useful, too!
Math Book Available Online
Recently the students learned how to access their math textbook/workbook online. This will be helpful if they need to print forgotten homework pages or review how to do certain problems for homework or when studying for tests. There are also fun games, math-related videos, and other educational activities. Ask your child to show you the many useful math resources available at http://connected.mcgraw-hill.com/connected/login.do. (It’s also accessible through our Portal to the Universe.)
Birthday Book Club Announcement (From the Library)
Would you like to honor your child on his/her birthday and help the library program as well? How? You can donate 500 NT (this cost reflects the average price of new hardback books) and a special name plate with your child’s photo, name, and current grade level will be placed in the front of a new library book to commemorate it as your child’s birthday book.
Bring 500 NT to the library on Meet The Teacher Night, August 31st at 6:30pm and choose a birthday book for your child. The last day for Birthday Book Selection will be Friday, September 7th. We will present the birthday book selection during library class and he/she will be the first to check out the new book. Other students, for as long as the book remains in the library, will be able to see his/her name and photo in the book after your child has read the book and returned it to the library.
If you would like to participate please come to the library during Meet The Teacher Night or the following week to choose your special book. If you have any questions, please let us know.
Here’s what we’ll be Learning This Week:
Bible – We will be doing lesson 3, where we’ll learn about Jacob and how God transformed his life.
Our memory verse for the week is John 3:16, which says, For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Language Arts – We’ll learn how to use different types of context clues to decipher unfamiliar words. Students will start writing a 5-paragraph essay. In addition, we’ll establish some norms for working in groups this year.
This week the students have a reading log to work on. They should read at home, fill in the sheet to show what and for how long they have read, and hand it in on Friday. Please remind your child to read regularly at home! It would be a good idea to set aside a certain amount of time for reading each day.
Spelling – We’re working on the list entitled “Sort 27”.
Math – We’re nearly done with Chapter 1. There will be a test on it this week and a little review before we go on to Chapter 2: Multiply Whole Numbers.
Science –We will learn about hardness and magnetism and how they vary in different types of matter.
Social Studies – We’ll learn about how the French and Dutch colonized parts of North America. There will be a test on Chapter 3 this week.
