|Communication||I hope you and your child can come to Meet the Teacher Night (MTTN) on Friday at 7:00pm. Birthday Book Club opens in the library at 6:30pm. School photos are on Monday this week. Please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org or at #0978385550 if you ever have questions.|
|Bible||This week First Graders will finish learning about Cain and Abel and begin to talk about Noah.
Our verse for the quarter is John 3:16. This is a verse the students will learn well this year.
Below are songs we will be singing of this verse. First Graders always love these songs!
|Reading Workshop||I love books and reading, and I am thrilled to help your child grow in this area. This week First Graders are continuing to build good reading habits as we launch Reading Workshop. Students have learned about “Good Fit”, “Just Right” books and how to choose them. Each student now has a book box full of “Good Fit” books. We will begin to build our reading stamina this week during our independent reading time.|
|Writing Workshop||We began Writing Workshop and have learned why we write and what kinds of things we write. This week students will make their Heart Map of all the things they love and like. They will then use their Heart Map to get story ideas. Students will also be writing sentences about Clifford this week.|
|Word Work/Phonics||We are reviewing phonemes each day this week at the same time that we practice our letter formation. Phonemes are the sounds in words such as in stop – /s/ /t/ /o/ /p/.|
|Vocabulary||We are beginning this week to learn a new word each day. I love learning new words, and I am so excited this year to help your First Grader grow in their vocabulary too.|
|Math||We are launching our guided math time by understanding expectations and practicing the procedures necessary for learning during math time. Students are also learning about organizing information as we make graphs. This week students will continuing explore number patterns, odd and even numbers, and how to count and write numbers in different ways.|
|Social Studies||This week we will discuss rules and laws in our communities and schools.|
|Reading Buddies||We had our second reading buddy time last week. Our reading buddy time is every Thursday afternoon from 2:15-2:45pm.|
|Optional Donation||In First Grade we do many extra, fun, and special projects such as baking, STEAM projects, and crafts. Also, at the end your child will receive a special portfolio with photos. Mr. Finch has allowed me to ask for an OPTIONAL NT 500 donation to help cover different items such as these. If you would like to give this donation please send the money in an envelope. This donation is appreciated but again completely optional.|

*Chapels– You are always welcome at all EMS and HS chapels…please refer to our newsletter or the EMS Express for the times and locations of EMS chapels. EMS Chapels are always at 8:10am. Our K-12 theme this year is All In. Many of our chapel and Bible times will explore this theme.
*Cafeteria Assistants– Miss Neff, our cafeteria manager, would love to have parent helpers in the cafeteria at lunchtime (between 11:00am and 12:00pm). If you would like to consider being a volunteer, please email Miss Neff at email@example.com for more information.
*All volunteers: If you wish to volunteer at any point in this school year, whether it be as a classroom assistant, lunch room assistant, or as a chaperone on field trips, you will need to begin the process in the front office with Mrs. Sawatzky or Mrs. Edwards by completing the CSPN training. Office hours are 7:30 am to 4:00pm. You will be able to begin volunteering as soon as you complete this process.
*After school– Please make sure your child has adult supervision after school. If you are not able to pick up your child immediately after school please make appropriate arrangements. Any student not under direct adult supervision will be asked to wait in the Atrium up until 4pm. Students are dismissed at 3:15pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays and at 2:50pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
*Water Bottles– Please make sure your child has a water bottle with fresh water every day. This is especially important during these afternoons with hot weather. The water bottle needs to be one that is easy to open and close. Water bottles that do not close well can make a huge mess if they tip over or in backpacks. Your child may only bring water to school. No other kind of drink is allowed.
*Snacks– Your child needs to bring a healthy snack each day. We will eat our snacks at 9:30am every morning. This snack will help your child refuel and have energy throughout the entire morning. Please do not send candy or sweets.
