The first weeks of school flew by this year. We have already reached the fifth week, the midpoint of our first quarter. This is the time when our attention turns to the progress–forward movement toward a goal–we have made through the first half of the first quarter. Teachers are busily scoring assessments and populating assignments in MasteryConnect to share with you next week at this time.
For some of you, MasteryConnect is nothing new. For others, next week’s progress reports will give you a first look at this standards-based reporting system. A greater focus narrows on the concepts and skills that are mastered rather than the overall percentage earned across a hodgepodge of categories: tests, quizzes, projects, homework, and participation. With all things new, I know that there will be questions and look forward to opportunities to continue the conversation about communicating student learning. One of the great resources that Morrison offers is found on our school’s homepage under the academic drop-down menu titled: Standards-Based Education. This is all a part of that forward motion toward what we believe is a better system of communicating learning.
Another part of progress is trying new things. All Morrison campuses will have a Professional Learning half-day on Monday, September 24, with students attending school only in the afternoon. This is on the Moon Festival holiday. One of the desires of Morrison is that this day will give students additional time with families by extending the weekend on what has traditionally been a regular school day. It is an afternoon schedule for students from 12:30 – 3:30 PM. Students will not need to get up early on Monday and come to school. Teachers will begin their workday as usual at 7:30 AM. I apologize for any inconvenience this brings and welcome your feedback.

Moon Festival Celebration–from the EMS Chinese Department
We are so excited that Moon Festival is coming soon. Are you all ready to celebrate this special holiday with family and friends?
Moon Festival is one of the biggest holidays in Chinese culture, and the Chinese department will continue our tradition to celebrate this special holiday with all students. Since there are so many different types/flavors of mooncakes, we welcome any extra mooncakes donated from Morrison families. You can have your child bring them to their classroom or drop them off at the front office (labeled “EMS Chinese”). This way, we all get to try different styles of moon cakes and celebrate the holiday on Sept. 19, 20, and 21 together. The Chinese Department will purchase pomelos, the traditional Moon Festival fruit, for each student. We will enjoy the fruit and make some crafts with the fruit. Thanks for your support.
