SPECIAL NOTE FROM MR. BASNETT ABOUT THE CREATION STATION
The Creation Station had a great first week with over 90 EMS student visits in 4 days! Most kids created the project of the week which was a car made with jenga blocks, bottle caps, and craft sticks. The kids did great and made some pretty impressive cars! A few others made jewelry items and key chains. As the Creation Station begins to get more use, some modifications will have to be made along the way to keep things running smoothly. After evaluating the first week, the following changes will be made starting this week:

  • Most weeks will have a “Project of the Week” – Last week was cars, and this week is catapults. Some weeks may be designated as “Open Creation” where kids can freely create with supplies.
  • A new goal for projects is “20 or less” – this means the project of the week can be completed in less than 20 minutes.
  • We will still use the sign in sheet and the “Creation Key” (lanyards) for students working on the project of the week – maximum of 12 students at a time
  • For a 45 minute session, we should be able to have 12 kids for 20 minutes, 5 minute transition, and 12 more kids for the last 20 minutes = 24 kids per day x 4 days = up to 96 kids that could complete the project of the week
  • To minimize waste and better manage our supplies, students will be provided with a kit for the project of the week – they can build the suggested project or use the supplies to build their own creation – projects can be taken home when finished
  • The Creation Station is now divided into 2 zones (there is a striped marking on the floor dividing the room) – the kids that are signed in and working on the project of the week can be on the project side of the room. The other side of the room is open to all EMS students without sign in (while the Creation Station is open) to allow them to do the Lego wall, or do independent crafting with supplies provided (generally paper, markers, scissors, glue, etc.)
We hope the new process will allow more students the opportunity to do the project of the week, while having separate “zones” allows kids to enjoy the Lego wall or other independent crafts. Keep in mind there may be occasions that the Creation station is closed for various reasons, but the current schedule is as follows:

Monday3:15-4:00pm
Tuesday: Closed
Wednesday3:00-3:45pm
Thursday3:00-3:45pm
Friday3:15-4:00pm
We still need a boat load of bottle caps (any size any color – even the ones from laundry detergent, snacks, etc. – *please rinse*) – We are also accepting donations of other crafting supplies (Hot glue sticks (regular and small size), new popsicle/craft sticks (any size), paint brushes (smaller sizes), paints in any color (spray paint, poster paint, water colors, etc.), string, screws, nails, hot glue guns, wood pieces of any size, blank business cards (any color), clean straws, etc. This list is not all inclusive. Most any item from a stationary or craft store can be used.

You can “feed” our NEW “Maker Monster” anytime you are in the library. His favorite snack is Maker Supplies (see photo) – Donated supplies go in his mouth and are collected in a bin inside. We will be thrilled with whatever is received!

One final and VERY IMPORTANT note: Parents are welcome in the Creation Station too! Keeping up to 24 kids in a 45 minute period engaged and helping them create a project in 20 minutes is an ambitious undertaking. I (Mr. Basnett) will do my best to keep up, but one or two parent volunteers a few times a week can make a huge impact. Many of the younger elementary students need help with assembly, hot glue guns, etc. Please consider helping out from time to time – your kids will love having you see what they are doing, and I will appreciate the help!

If you have any ideas for projects that you think can be completed in 20 minutes or less, please send them to: basnettd1@mca.org.tw
