CREATION STATION UPDATE FROM MR. BASNETT
The Creation Station has been bustling with activity in recent weeks! We have been averaging about 15-25 students after school each day we are open. Students have made a variety of guided “projects of the week” and hopefully you have been able to see some of their handiwork. We have also had some sessions of free form design where students can work on individual or group projects of their choosing. I (Mr. Basnett) have really enjoyed getting to interact and get to know the kids better. While I teach MS and HS Robotics courses, I don’t have opportunities to get acquainted with elementary students other than the time in the Creation Station. I can tell you first hand now they are some great kids with very creative minds! I enjoy seeing their creative thought processes in action as they work with a variety of materials (popsicle/craft sticks, rubber bands, bottle caps, paper, cloth, jewelry, cardboard, wooden blocks, hot glue, etc.). Recently I have seen students create their own rubber band guns, popsicle stick houses, wind chimes, bracelets, key chains, and even a slide for a pet hamster! We had our new laser cutter (purchased with last year’s Annual Fund thanks to generous donations!) installed a few weeks ago and several students have been able to help design and etch custom signs on pieces of scrap wood that they sanded.

As we have mentioned in past updates, kids love creating, and we have an ongoing need for consumable supplies. In recent weeks, the students have been asking for more paints and paint brushes. We also use several hot glue sticks a week (large and small diameter sticks). The “Maker Monster” in the library will get some updates in the near future as he currently has a broken arm, but you can continue feeding him donations in the meantime. We have received many useful donations in recent weeks, so thank you!

Please consider donating some of the following items: paint (preferably water based or spray paint of any color), paint brushes (craft size up to 1-2″ wide), hot glue sticks. small pieces of wood (generic jenga blocks of all sizes are in high demand), craft sticks, and other miscellaneous craft supplies.

As always, we encourage parents to stop by the Creation Station anytime we are open to see what your kids are doing and even participate! Thank you so much for your support as we work to fully utilize this wonderful space!
