I enjoy the busyness of beginning something new. It is exciting. Sure it is stressful, and many don’t like all the challenges that come with change. In the midst of all that goes into the beginning of the year, something surprised me today and made me reflect on the value of teamwork taught through athletics.
The middle-school soccer season started on Monday. I was involved in discussions about coaches and teams, so I knew it was beginning. But I hadn’t really thought about the start of our team sports seasons until someone approached me about a team-dynamics problem. It made me reflect on an article I read this week about teamwork. In it was the following quote:
“The ability of a group of people to do remarkable things hinges on how well those people pull together as a team.” Simon Sinek (Leaders Eat Last)
As educators, we often talk about the 21st-century skills that our students need in order to be successful. Collaboration and communication rise to the top as skills one needs to be productive on a team. I know of no better activity than team sports to teach students these skills. It is important for our students to experience being a part of something bigger than themselves, to collaborate and communicate with their teammates toward a goal. There is something inspiring about seeing a team work together: unity. In John 17:20-21, Jesus prayed that believers would be one – united with each other, with Him, and the Father. Many, working together as one, can do amazing things.
Encourage your child to participate in a team sport this year. It is a powerful learning opportunity.

Here is the schedule for the evening. K5 students will be giving ‘student-led tours’ to their parents for part of the evening, so please bring your children with you. Childcare will be provided throughout the evening for parents attending the Middle-School presentation. The Boracay Missions Team (HS students) will be down in the Commons for K5 students and their younger siblings, so please use the available childcare during the MS presentation.
MTTN is a time when our teachers get the chance to briefly introduce themselves to parents and set the stage for a thriving partnership for the rest of the school year. See you Friday night!
